Noto Peninsula Earthquake of 2024 Soup distribution on April 18, 2024

The most important thing in disaster recovery support is to avoid becoming the hunted one

In other words, I hope that it will not cause any inconvenience to those affected by the disaster.

I think we will need to provide our own lifelines for this.

Lifelines include water, electricity, gas, food, shelter, and toilets.

I'm going to Nanao to serve food this time, but I wonder if these lifelines have been restored.

What is the road situation like? What is lacking and needed?

Gathering this information is key.

Successful work and food distribution is 70% preparation and 30% work on site.

Getting Ready to Go

First check the water

It is said that an adult human drinks about 3 liters of water per day.

As of April 18, 2024 in Nanao, where we are going

Apparently the water started coming out a week ago.

Water is a precious commodity in places where people cannot even take regular baths.

The branch car office has a 90L tank of water.

This is enough for one adult to survive for about a month.

I also brought 10 additional plastic bottles of 20L drinking water.

Checking the fuel

Battery & Voltage Check

The first step is to check if the battery is charged with electricity. Branch cars can generate electricity in two ways.

Solar power generation

The ceiling is covered with solar panels.

from the solar power to the battery.

Driving charge

The battery is charged by running the Branch Car Office.

The battery is charged by driving the Branch Car Office.

Other checks

Water, electricity, and the remaining three - gas, food, and shelter

There are two gas stoves installed in the company, and two gas cartridges.

We always keep six gas cartridges on hand for cooking outside.

現地に行って感じたこと

About five months after the Noto Peninsula earthquake, water and electricity were gradually being restored in Nanao.

However, those affected by the disaster in Nanao all said the same thing.

"Things are gradually improving in our Nanao area, but Oku-Noto and Wajima are still in a difficult situation," he said.

Those words caught my attention, so I took a brunch car from Anamizu to Wajima.

As soon as we left Nanao, the scenery changed completely from Anamizu.

In Anamizu, many ordinary houses are collapsing under the weight of the black roof tiles. When a building has something heavy on its roof, its center of gravity becomes like a pendulum, causing it to lose balance and become more likely to collapse.

Black roof tiles are strong and durable and are suited to the local climate to withstand wind and snow, but these same strengths can easily become a drawback during earthquakes.

I hope smiles return to Noto soon.
